ANOTHER BUDGET – ANOTHER DEFICIT
In the spring, the Yukon New Democratic Party predicted the Yukon Party government would be taking the territory’s finances into the second-straight year of deficit spending. On the first day of the fall sitting of the legislature, the government confirmed this is indeed the case as the premier tabled the 2010-11 Supplementary Budget.
“Tuesday’s announcement of continued deficit spending flies in the face of the premier’s claims that his government is good at managing money,” says NDP Finance critic Steve Cardiff.
This fiscal year, the 2010-11 Supplementary Budget, shows the Yukon Party government will be $2.4 million in deficit. This year’s deficit can be expected to further increase when the the government tables further spending bills.
Also, new numbers show the Yukon Party government went $25.7 million into deficit in 2009-10.
“With two years of deficits, this government’s spending habits are continuing at an alarming rate,” says Cardiff.
