STATEMENT FROM LIZ HANSON ON THE DEATH OF JACK LAYTON

It was with great sadness that I awoke this morning to learn of Jack Layton’s passing.

Jack has served Canada and his constituents with distinction. And the New Democratic Party
family was so lucky to have Jack at the helm as he led the party to historic achievements.

He embodied to best of politics, and was motivated to make real positive impacts in our country,
our world and in the lives of ordinary Canadians.

Jack had a deep love of the North, and he and Olivia were always happy to be in the Yukon,
particularly when they had the time to paddle our waters.

As we mourn losing a great Canadian and a tireless champion, let us remember the words he
penned just days before his death: “My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear.
Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the
world.”

Yukoners are invited to write in the book of condolences in the foyer of the YTG Administration
Building. We will make sure your kind words and prayers are passed along to his loving wife
Olivia and the rest of the family.

As well, condolences may be expressed on the federal party website at
